Paul Merson has admitted that he got it wrong when he claimed that Tottenham Hotspur hitman Harry Kane wouldn’t score goals under Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese replaced Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs’ head coach a year ago.

When he arrived, Mourinho did so with a reputation for playing negative, defensive football.

And Merson claimed – now infamously – that the 27-year-old would find it difficult in an attacking sense with Mourinho as his boss.

But the Tottenham striker has 13 goals and 10 assists from 14 games across all competitions this season.

On this form, he might well obliterate his previous-best for a season under Pochettino, in terms of all-round involvement in goals.

Kane scored a late winner in the 1-0 victory away to West Bromwich Albion last week.

And everytime he does find the net these days, many fans of the North London side take to Twitter to goad Merson over his comments – and here’s how the former Arsenal man has responded:

He wrote in The Daily Star: “Harry Kane has proved me wrong when I said he’d struggle to score goals for Jose Mourinho. Mourinho is not an entertainer. He’s a winner. That’s why Tottenham’s 1-0 win at West Brom was such a big result – and it was Kane who scored right at the end.

“Mourinho doesn’t care about entertaining the fans. He just wants to win the game. So I didn’t think Kane would have as many chances to score.”
