Paul Merson has admitted that he ‘couldn’t believe’ what he was watching as Tottenham Hotspur knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side booked their place in the last four by securing their passage via away goals after losing the second-leg encounter at the Etihad 4-3. (4-4 on aggregate).

Speaking to the Debate on Sky Sports Premier League (17/04/2019 10:05 pm), Merson held his hands up and admitted that he was shocked in the manner in which the game was being played at the Etihad Stadium.

“I have to hold my hands up to Tottenham,” Merson told the Debate. “To be 4-2 down and look like being out and come back. You could easily be disheartened. They weren’t really in the game. They had a couple of glimpses. But WOW!

“I’m still sitting here now. I can’t believe what I have just watched. I really can’t. I didn’t expect this game to be like that. Not in my wildest dreams did I expect anything like this.”

Tottenham will now meet Ajax in the semi-final after they saw off Juventus on Tuesday night in what will no doubt be a mouthwatering encounter.

The other semi-final match will see Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool pit their wits against Lionel Messi’s Barcelona as it is likely that there could be an all English final.

The Reds reached the final last season and were beaten by Real Madrid and they will be hoping to go one better this time around.

But both Liverpool and Tottenham will now turn their attention to Premier League matters and trying to win the title or secure their top-four status for the season.
