Aston Villa reached the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday with an emphatic 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic at Villa Park.

Scott Hogan netted a first-half brace to help Aston Villa into a 3-1 lead, with Albert Adomah also on the scoresheet in an entertaining opening 45 minutes.

The second half did not live up to his predecessor by way of goals, but Birkir Bjarnason sealed the victory on 74 minutes.

The 25-year-old Hogan, who joined the Villans in January, now has three goals this season – all in the Carabao Cup – but his second last night was particularly class, volleying home from the edge of the box.

And Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath has singled out the former Brentford hitman for praise on Twitter.

If Hogan can find the net in the Championship as regularly as he does in the EFL Cup then it would go a long, long way to helping Villa’s promotion hopes.

By his own admission, it wasn’t a great start to life at Villa, netting once in 13 league outings last season, but he will hope to drastically improve those numbers this time around.
