Tommy Elphick turned DeAndre Yedlin’s cross into his own net to put the Magpies in the lead just before the half-hour mark.
Aaron Tshibola scored the equaliser for Villa with just two minutes of normal time remaining.
Former Villa defender McGrath was following the match, and he was pleased with Roberto Di Matteo’s side’s performance against the Magpies.

Visitors Newcastle had 50% of the possession, took 18 shots of which four were on target, and earned five corners, according to BBC Sport.
The Villans are 17th in the Championship table at the moment with nine points from as many matches.
Villa will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Barnsley at Oakwell in the Championship.
