The former Villa defender has praised the 24-year-old for trying his best for the Villans.
McGrath sent the message to Gardner following Villa’s match against Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
The Villans failed to return to winning ways in the Championship on Sunday afternoon, as they played out a 2-2 draw with Forest at Villa Park.
Villa are one of the biggest clubs of England and are aiming to return to the Premier League.
The Villans got relegated from the English top flight to the Championship at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
Roberto Di Matteo’s side have not started the 2016-17 season strongly and find themselves as low as 17th in the league table at the moment.
Villa will return to action on Wednesday evening when they take on Brentford at Villa Park in the Championship.
The Villans need to go on a winning run now in order to maintain their chances of a top- six finish in the Championship this season.
