Aston Villa were beaten by Midland rivals West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
Paul McGrath has thanked Aston Villa supporters for their warm welcome during their defeat against West Brom on Saturday, but he did admit that the result on the day was a ‘pity’.
Dean Smith’s side suffered their third defeat on home soil in the Championship this season, with the away team scoring both their goals in the first half.
Hal Robson-Kanu, who came into the side for the suspended Dwight Gayle, opened the scoring before Jay Rodriquez pounced on Conor Hourihane’s poor interception to double his side’s lead.
After the match, Holte End legend McGrath had a warm message for the club and its supporters on his personal Twitter account as he expressed his disappointment at the end result.
It was an open first 20 minutes of the match, with striker Tammy Abraham arguably having the best opportunity of the game when Ahmed Elmohamdy won possession high the pitch, passed it to his player, who missed a guilt-edge chance to open the scoring.
Thereafter, Darren Moore’s side started forcing Villa back as they targeted the wide areas, particularly the right-hand side, with right-back Alan Hutton constantly struggling to stop the threat coming from his side.
Following Villa’s run to the playoff final last term, they have struggled to prove their worth this time around, with Smith replacing the sacked Steve Bruce in October.
Playmaker Jack Grealish has not played for the club since December and it has seen Villa win only two league games since – against Swansea City, with Orjan Nyland saving a last-minute penalty and then bottom-of-the-table Ipswich Town.
