The Frenchman was unpopular at Ibrox and Rangers have not had a foreign manager in the decade since he left.

Rangers appear to be pushing hard for the appointment of Portuguese boss Pedro Caixinha as their successor to Mark Warburton.

The Al-Gharafa manager has become the overwhelming first-choice for the club, who parted company with Warburton in acrimonious fashion last month.

Rangers fans however are wary. Caixinha has a good record in Portugal and Mexico and may be a brilliant manager. However, he is fairly unknown to the casual football observer, and even the odd anorak.

But three words that make a name are behind the Ibrox trepidation – Paul Le Guen.

Despite good form in the UEFA Cup the Frenchman, who was similarly a left-field choice at Ibrox, struggled at the club.

He failed to grasp the importance of Rangers as more than just a football team, alienated the club captain Barry Ferguson and performed poorly domestically.

Rangers fans were not exactly upset when he left the club in January 2007. Ten years on and Rangers look like going for a foreign manager yet again. Fans though have not forgotten the spectre of Le Guen and, as expected, are wary.
