Mike Williamson was hardly a fans favourite at St James’ but Wolves are crying out for his experience at the back.
Wolves defender Mike Williamson has told the Express and Star that he is desperate to make his mark on the first-team after a year out with injury – and Paul Lambert will be equally excited about the 33-year-old’s return.
The former Newcastle United centre-half, who was largely derided by fans at St James’ Park, moved to Molineux in January but is yet to play even a single minute of action in the senior side as of yet due to a series of hamstring and hernia problems.
However, the long wait may soon be over after Williamson came through 45 minutes unscathed in the under-23’s 4-0 defeat to West Ham United on Monday night and the towering defender says he can hardly wait to finally pull on the famous gold in a competitive match.

“It’s been an extremely frustrating time. I just want to get out there and play,” Williamson told the Express and Star.
“I’m 100 per cent desperate to contribute. It’s been the toughest year of my career, it’s been very hard.”
Lambert will no doubt share his enthusiasm, with Wolves leaking goals left, right and centre in Williamson’s absence.
The former Blackburn boss stated the need for more experience in the defence recently with 21-year-old duo Kortney Hause and Dominic Iorfa both coming under fire from fans after a number of error-strewn performances.

And the timely return of Williamson could save Lambert a few pounds in the January window, with the defender’s knowledge of the lower leagues and vital experience potentially remedying the defensive woes.
Nonetheless, it may still concern a number of fans that their club is so reliant upon the fitness of an ageing centre half who has been out of action for over 12 months and who, before that, was a regular scapegoat for his previous supporters.
