Rangers are aiming to return to the Scottish Premiership via the playoffs.
Former Celtic midfielder Paul Lambert has explained to Sky Sports why Rangers should be welcomed back to the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers are currently a Championship side and are aiming to get promoted to the Scottish top flight via the playoffs.
Rangers will take on Motherwell away from home in the second leg of the Premiership playoff final later today, having lost the first leg 3-1 at Ibrox in Glasgow on Thursday.
“If I were a player or a manager, then I would want Rangers back in the league,” Lambert told Sky Sports.
“Glasgow needs it, I think Scotland needs it to raise the profile of the game. But you have got to earn the right to get in there.”
Celtic and Rangers are the two biggest clubs in Scotland, and them playing each other on a regular basis once again will be massive for Scottish football.
At this moment in time, the Gers have the weaker team, and even next season – if they get promoted – they may not be able to compete with the Bhoys for the league title.
However, the Scottish Premiership needs Rangers for its growth and also to attract viewers.
The Glasgow giants last featured in the top flight in the 2011-12 season, and their potential return next campaign should be welcomed by one and all.
The Old Firm derby is one of the biggest games in the world, and the return to the Premiership of Rangers will mean that one will get to see more of them.
However, as Lambert says, Rangers need to prove that they are good enough to play in the Scottish top flight.
