Paul Lambert is delighted that Celtic have hired Neil Lennon.

Celtic announced last week that they had officially appointed the former Hoops midfielder, who was offered the job by Dermot Desmond after the Scottish Cup final win over Hearts which completed the treble Treble.

Lennon took over from Brendan Rodgers on an interim basis in February when his fellow Northern Irishman left Glasgow for Leicester City in the Premier League.

It was a divisive decision, with a lot of fans preferring a high-profile appointment following tenuous links to the likes of Andre Villas-Boas, Rafael Benitez and even Jose Mourinho.

This will be Lennon’s second spell in charge of the Parkhead side, having previously overseen a period of success between 2010 and 2014, and Lambert, who played with the 47-year-old at Celtic, says that his old team-mate is the right man for the job.

He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “I think it is great. I think he has done really well since taking over. To win the two trophies that he did was an excellent achievement.

“Now that he has been appointed full-time he can really get into the job, get his feet well and truly under the table.

“He knows the club from before having been both a player and a manager and he appreciates exactly what is required. He is a good guy as well Lenny. Hopefully they can go on and have more success under him.”

There might be a backlash if Lennon isn’t successful, given that Villas-Boas, appointed as Marseille coach last week, was evidently willing to return to management. That being said, Lennon is a winner and he has the personality that the Celtic players have already bought into it seems.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can hold off the challenge from Rangers next term en route to a ninth successive Premiership crown.
