Wolverhampton Wanderers picked up a valuable win as they beat Fulham 3-1 in the Championship on Saturday.
Wolves manager Paul Lambert
Wolves boss Paul Lambert has told the club’s official website that the side’s defence carried out his instructions ahead of their clash with Fulham perfectly, and insisted that goalkeeper Carl Ikeme is at the top of his game right now.
Wolves extended their unbeaten run to four games and put even more daylight between themselves and the Championship’s bottom three as they surprised the play-off chasing Cottagers at Craven Cottage as goals from Ivan Cavaleiro, Andi Weimann and David Edwards led them to a 3-1 win.
But while the attack may take some praise having scored three goals in a game for the first time since January, Lambert was also keen to laud the performances of the back five, in particular his goalkeeper.
“One thing I do say is that, if a team’s really good in possession, then make sure you get a good block on them and let them go wide,” he told the club’s official website.
“They carried the instruction out to a tee and, defensively, all of them looked excellent.
Wolves’ Carl Ikeme
“The whole back four defended really well, and Carl is at the top of his game at the moment and made a big save in a big moment when it was 2-1.”
With five points now separating Wolves from the bottom three – and a game in hand over all of their rivals to potentially extend their advantage further – Lambert’s men appear to be getting close to having enough points on the board to virtually ensure their survival.
And certainly based on their current form – having won their last three – it may not be that great a surprise if they managed to put even more distance between themselves and those fighting for safety shortly after the season resumes following the international break.
