Will Celtic win the treble under Brendan Rodgers this season?
Paul Lambert has told The Glasgow Evening Times it is “quite incredible” that Celtic have only ever won the treble on three occasions.
The former Scotland midfielder skippered the Bhoys to their most recent treble success in 2001 when Celtic – then under Martin O’Neill, in his first season – masterminded a Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup triumph.
O’Neill became the first Hoops manager to achieve the feat since Jock Stein, who did it twice in 1967 and 1969 respectively.
Given how Celtic and Rangers have dominated the Scottish game for decades, Lambert says it is astonishing how his former side have only achieved it a handful of times.
“It is quite incredible when you consider that,” he told The GET.
“You do forget just how rare it is to achieve it. But then, the reason it is so rare for teams to do it is because how difficult it is.”
With that being said, few would back against Brendan Rodgers becoming the third manager to win a treble with Celtic.
Rodgers’s side face Aberdeen in a Scottish League Cup final this month, knowing that they sit 10 points clear of the second-placed Dons in the Premiership table.
By Christmas, it is quite possible that the Northern Irishman would only need to add the Scottish Cup to his haul in order to emulate the likes of O’Neill and Stein.
