Aston Villa are among the favourites for the Championship title this season.

Paul Lambert has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 3rd August, that if Aston Villa fail to get promoted this season then he doesn’t know if they’ll ever get out of the Championship.

Villa have invested heavily again this summer, with the Midlands club funding some big wages for experienced players.

The claret and blues have brought in John Terry, in their stand out piece of summer business.

However, it is the addition of Glenn Whelan from Stoke City, which Lambert feels has been unheralded.

“To be honest with you, I think this is their best chance to do it this year,” Lambert said when asked about Villa’s promotion chances this season.

“Every time I’ve seen Glenn Whelan, he looks a brilliant player. He’ll carry them along.

“I think if they don’t go up this year, then I don’t know that they ever will.”

Villa get their season under way on Saturday, with a match against Hull City, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

There is a great amount of interest in how Villa will get on this term, with Steve Bruce assembling one of the strongest squads in the Championship.

Villa could only manage to muster up a mid-table finish last term, and there is now big pressure on them to improve.
