Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has fired a warning to John Terry after he emerged as the new favourite for the vacant manager’s role.

John Terry of Aston Villa during the pre season friendly match between Aston Villa and Watford at Villa Park on July 29, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

Terry is the new favourite to land the Aston Villa job and secure his first management position since retiring from football on Sunday (The Mirror).

The former Chelsea and England star has been touted to return to Villa Park as assistant manager to Thierry Henry.

But that was thrown into doubt after reports emerged from France that Henry could take up a job offer to manage his old club Monaco.

That, claims The Mirror, has cleared a path for Terry to throw his hat in the ring to replace Steve Bruce, the man who brought him to Aston Villa last season.

Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers is another name in the frame but The Mirror claims Terry crucially has the support of Villa’s players after impressing last season as the club’s skipper, when he made 36 appearances as they just missed out on promotion back to the Premier League.

That will count for little if Terry does get the job, though, according to former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert who was discussing the potential appointment on Sky Sports’ The Debate.

“No matter how many caps you’ve got (or) what you’ve won, nothing prepares you to go into that hotseat,” Lambert told The Debate.

Paul Lambert the manager of Aston Villa looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Hull City and Aston Villa at the KC Stadium on February 10, 2015 in Hull, England.

“You can go in there and confrontation finds you as a manager, you don’t go up looking for it every morning, it comes to your door, ‘Oh he’s come in again’ you actually get sick of seeing the same players at certain times, it does find you.

“Going in there, it’ll be fresh and then all of a sudden that happens, that happens, next day the same thing happens, something else happens differently and you think ‘This isn’t quite as easy as everyone thinks it is’.

John Terry of Aston Villa celebrates victory after the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Reading at Villa Park on April 3, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

“So no matter how much you’ve done in your actual playing career (it doesn’t prepare you for management), one thing you do know is you have to get results.

“And if you go into Aston Villa, it’s a big, big club with a big expectancy level where they want to be up there and if you don’t get there you feel it.”
