Paul Lambert has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 10th October, that Roberto Di Matteo could not have many complaints about being sacked from Aston Villa.

Di Matteo was dismissed by Villa last week, after a disastrous start to the campaign.

And Lambert insists that Di Matteo cannot have many complaints about his sacking, as he spent so much money at Villa.

“The big thing Roberto probably had is that Aston Villa is a huge club. It should never have been in the position it’s in,” Lambert, who used to manage Villa, said. “It should be with Everton.

“If you don’t get results when you spend money, you know what’s coming. The amount of money they have spent the last two years, their plight has not been acceptable.”

Di Matteo brought in the likes of Ross McCormack and Jonathan Kodjia in big money deals last summer, but he failed to turn around the Midlands side’s form.

Villa won just one of their first 11 Championship matches, and they currently sit in 19th place in the table.

A 2-0 defeat against Preston North End ultimately cost Di Matteo his job, and Villa are now searching for yet another manager.

Steve Clarke is currently in temporary charge of Villa, with their next match coming against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.
