Felix Wiedwald did not feature for Leeds United against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship on Wednesday.

Felix Wiedwald of Leeds United looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Derby County and Leeds United at iPro Stadium on February 21, 2018 in Derby, England.

It must have been disappointing for Felix Wiedwald to be left out of the Leeds United starting lineup against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but head coach Paul Heckingbottom’s comments after the match to Leeds Live suggest that the goalkeeper could get back into the team.

Wiedwald has made some costly errors in goal for Leeds this season, the latest of which came against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium in the Championship last weekend.

The German goalkeeper was dropped for the Championship match against Wolves on Wednesday evening, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell taking his place.

While the 27-year-old 2017 summer signing from Werder Bremen may be worried about his place in the Leeds team, head coach Heckingbottom has suggested that he could earn back his spot.

Heckingbottom told Leeds Live: “You have to send the right message. When things aren’t happening right you have to make changes.

“Yes, we’ll work on it and we’ll be working our socks off with Felix to make those adjustments, improvements because, as with any player out of the team, if you can improve those and get them beyond the players in the team, you improve your team straight away.

“It’s something that we’ll be working with all the time. I just felt I needed to make the change to make the team stronger.”

Much-needed change

Wiedwald is a good goalkeeper, but the German has made far too many mistakes not to have his place in the team questioned.

It was smart of Heckingbottom to drop the 27-year-old against Wolves, as it will now force the German to step up his game and work harder than ever in training.
