Paul Heckingbottom has had his say on Leeds United.
Leeds United took the ambitious move to sack Paul Heckingbottom and appoint Marcelo Bielsa over the summer – and Heckingbottom has now had his say on his former club.
The Whites only brought in Heckingbottom from Barnsley in February, but decided they had seen enough by the summer, after just four wins in 16 games.
In came the famed ‘El Loco’ Bielsa, and whilst it appeared to be a bold move at the time, it’s certainly paying dividends for Leeds.
Saturday’s 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers kept Leeds in second place in the Championship table, and they even have a five point lead over third-placed Sheffield United.
Bielsa has turned Leeds into legitimate title contenders, and a return to the Premier League is no longer a dream but a real aspiration for this season.
Much will depend on how Leeds can keep up with this frantic Bielsa style, and Heckingbottom has now had his say on their promotion hopes.
Heckingbottom has told The Express that he thinks Leeds have put all their eggs in one basket by going all out for promotion either this season or next, and believes there is no guarantee that they will do it noting that they ‘have to do it’ having thrown money at the bid.
“They have all their eggs in one basket now in terms of this season or next [promotion],” said Heckingbottom. “For this sort of hierarchy, they’ve got to do it, they’ve committed to it and are going to give it a good go in terms of finance and throwing everything they can at it.”
“Certainly this year or next without a doubt [they will be looking to go up]. The league is so competitive and challenging that whilst people have ambitions to go up, there is no guarantee,” he added.
