Paul Heckingbottom has told BBC Radio Leeds how Jay Roy Grot has impressed him in Leeds United training recently.

Grot has endured a difficult first season at Elland Road, after arriving in the summer transfer window.

The Dutch forward was used fairly frequently at the start of the campaign, but he became a figure of ridicule.

Grot just couldn’t find a way to goal in his initial showings for Leeds, and eventually was taken out of first-team contention by Thomas Christiansen.

Since, Grot has concentrated on impressing for Leeds’ under-23 side and he scored a brace for them in midweek.

Heckingbottom ended up recalling Grot to the senior squad this weekend, for their match against Sheffield Wednesday, and he made an impression after coming off the bench.

The 20-year-old scored Leeds’ goal in their 2-1 defeat against Wednesday, to open his account for the Whites.

And Heckingbottom said: “We have been working on things we have spoken about and getting in those [goalscoring] positions. We’ve started using him in one of the wider positions in training more and he’s shown he can get into those areas. Luckily for us, he did get us the goal.”

Leeds have now won just one of Heckingbottom’s first eight games in charge, and they have slipped down to 14th in the Championship table.
