Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom addressed the media in the aftermath of his side’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last night, and hinted that Matthew Pennington might not have been fully fit, after being thrown into the line-up at the last minute, as quoted by Leeds Live.

The Whites are currently in the midst of a woeful run of form that has seen them win just one Championship game since February 24th, and they seem destined to finish in mid-table mediocrity.

Pennington has been one of the few success stories for Leeds this season, after moving to Elland Road from Everton on a season long loan in the summer of 2017.

The 23-year-old has made 21 Championship appearances for the west Yorkshire outfit, and has impressed with the quality of his performances.

Heckingbottom spoke to reporters after his side’s defeat to Villa last night, and responded when asked if Pennington was fully fit after being thrown into the starting line-up, having been out injured for 10 days, as quoted by Leeds Live:

“Penners has just really been thrown in. Put himself forward which he need applauding for and he’s done very well. Luckily enough he’s been out eight or nine days so not lost fitness or anything like that so he stood up to it very well, I thought him and Paudie did very well.”

The Everton loanee ended up playing extremely well against Steve Bruce’s side, but the intensity of the game must have been difficult for him to adjust to.

Next up for Leeds is a clash against Barnsley next weekend, and nothing less than a win will do for Paul Heckingbottom’s men.
