Leeds United are expected to be extremely active during the transfer window this summer.
Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom spoke to reporters yesterday, and reflected on his side’s underwhelming Championship campaign, hinting at the type of player he will be targeting during the summer transfer window, as quoted by Leeds Live.
The Whites endured a difficult Championship campaign and eventually finished the season in 13th position in the table, a full 15 points adrift of the play-off places.
Heckingbottom has a lot of work to do at Elland Road this summer, if he is to guide his side to promotion next term, and he will surely be looking to strengthen in almost every position on the pitch.
When speaking to reporters yesterday, the 40-year-old hinted that he will be targeting more physical, ball-winning type midfielders in the summer, as quoted by Leeds Live:
“A better balance of the squad. Better balance in terms of having players who can affect the game when we’ve not got the ball, affect the game through physicality. We’ve got talent in there, we’ve got good technicians in there, so we need to get the balance of the squad right so you’re equipped for every sort of game in the Championship. Think how many games you’ve watched this season, all the different styles of play.”
It is unclear as to how much money Heckingbottom will be given this summer, but if Leeds are to challenge for promotion next season, the former Barnsley boss will surely have to invest heavily in his playing squad.
Whilst the Leeds boss’ comments regarding the need for more physicality are undeniably true, they do perhaps reflect a lack of understanding as to how much work actually needs to be done at Elland Road.
Only time will tell if Heckingbottom brings in the kind of quality that is needed, however.
