Leeds United’s defensive options are now short, after an injury to Matthew Pennington last night.

Paul Heckingbottom has confirmed to the club’s official Periscope channel that Paudie O’Connor could make his Leeds United debut at the weekend.

Leeds had a frustrating night against Fulham, as they picked up two more injuries in a 2-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.

The Whites saw both Kalvin Phillips and Matthew Pennington leave the field early on, with Heckingbottom’s in defence becoming increasingly slim.

It was noticeable that O’Connor was included in Leeds’ travelling squad which went down to the capital.

And when asked whether O’Connor could now come into Leeds’ team against Sunderland on Saturday, Heckingbottom said: “Paudie has been training with us, because of injuries and players missing at centre-back. It’s important that if he’s needed he knows what we want from him and we’re not just throwing him in last minute.

“He could be, he could be [put into the starting line-up]. He’s the next one in line. He’s comfortable there. It’s another reshuffle we could do without, but on the back of that it’s another chance for someone else to come in and stake a claim.”

O’Connor’s only previous experience of senior football came in the League of Ireland, when he impressed for Limerick.

If he does start for Leeds against Sunderland then the pressure will be on as Heckingbottom’s side will be favourites to pick up the three points.

Sunderland are currently second bottom in the Championship, and Leeds will be viewing the game as a good chance to get back to winning ways.
