Liverpool Under-23 coach Barry Lewtas has told the club’s official website of his delight for striker Paul Glatzel.

Liverpool’s Under-23’s were in action on Friday afternoon, taking on West Ham United in Premier League 2.

The Reds claimed a 4-2 victory, with Luis Longstaff, Tom Clayton and Liam Millar all on the scoresheet- but it was Glatzel’s goal that grabbed the headlines.

Glatzel came off the bench in the second half to grab a late goal, as he continues to ramp up his return from injury.

The 19-year-old missed the whole of last season with a cruciate knee injury, and is now attempting to build up his match shaprness.

There were high hopes for Glatzel after he hit 21 goals in 30 games during the 2018-19 season, before that terrible knee injury struck.

The German is now coming back to fitness, and having been branded ‘wonderful’ by Jurgen Klopp, he has now been praised again.

Under-23 coach Lewtas has admitted that Glatzel has looked ‘really sharp’ in training, and was impressed with his display on Friday as they ease him back into action.

“It was great to see Paul get a goal at the end,” said Lewtas. “He has looked really sharp in training. He holds the ball up really well for us, he brings others into play. He had one shot blocked and scored from the other.”

“We are being a bit careful with Paul after his injury but that doesn’t mean we are wrapping him up in cotton wool. We are just easing him in until he’s fully ready to go,” he added.
