Glasgow Rangers legend Paul Gascoigne says that Leeds United and Chelsea wanted him before he moved to Ibrox.
Paul Gascoigne at Rangers
Gascoigne, a legend in England and in Scotland, joined Rangers from Lazio back in July 1995 for a transfer fee reported by talkSPORT to be worth £4.3 million.
The 52-year-old former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has said that before he joined Rangers, he had the chance to move to Leeds or Chelsea.
The Englishman has made it clear that he would not have joined Chelsea, and he has also said just how intimidating Elland Road was for him.
Gascoigne told The Yorkshire Evening Post: “I nearly signed for Leeds, but I ended up turning them down and joining Rangers.
“Chelsea also wanted to sign me, but I was not going there and the only English club I would have gone for was Leeds. But I ended up going to Rangers.”
Gascoigne added: “But I did not realise that after signing for Rangers, the next England game was at Elland Road (against Sweden) and I got hammered!
“Elland Road was an intimidating place. I remember taking a corner once and it was really scary. They were all singing Leeds, Leeds, Leeds.”
2019-20 Success for Rangers and Leeds United
Both Rangers and Leeds are massive clubs, and this season, the Gers and the Whites are aiming to achieve success in their own ways.
While Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are challenging for the Scottish Premiership title and are aiming to make an impact in the Europa League, Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds are hoping to clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League.
