Former Ibrox star Paul Gascoigne has suggested on talkSPORT that Rangers can close the gap on Celtic next season.

Gascoigne made the comments following Rangers’ 2-0 win against Celtic at Ibrox in the Old Firm derby at the weekend.

The win for Steven Gerrard’s side this past Sunday means that Rangers are now six points behind their bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops have already clinched their league title this season – their eighth in a row – while the Gers are guaranteed to finish second in the standings.

Gascoigne believes that Rangers will get stronger next season, and he has suggested that manager Gerrard is backed in the summer transfer window and is allowed to sign the right players.

Gascoigne said on talkSPORT: “Give Steven Gerrard money, get the right players in. It’s only six points.”

Gascoigne added about Rangers: “They are going to get better and stronger.”

Meanwhile, former Rangers striker and manager Ally McCoist has suggested that losing the Old Firm derby should not have any affect on whether or not Neil Lennon gets the Celtic managerial role on a permanent basis.

Lennon was appointed the Celtic manager in February 2019 until the end of the season following the departure of Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City.

McCoist said on The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (8:37am, May 13, 2019): “Celtic’s level of performance yesterday was very poor, very poor. What I would say, it (whether Lennon gets the managerial role or not) shouldn’t be affected by yesterday’s result and performance to be honest with you.”
