The Magpies maintained their place in the Championship’s top six, but perhaps feel they should be higher.

Paul Dummett has explained to the Chronicle that Newcastle United were forced to learn a tough lesson following their draw with Aston Villa at the weekend.

Despite dominating much of the game at Villa Park, Rafael Benitez’s side were forced to settle for just one point after Aaron Tshibola cancelled out Tommy Elphick’s own goal with just two minutes to go.

And after the Magpies had exactly twice as many attempts and shots on target as their opponents, Dummett suggested that they have to learn from the experience.

“It’s a lesson for us. When we get chances we need to take them and put the game to bed,” he told the Chronicle.

“It’s two points dropped, but we have to stay positive as there is another game on Wednesday.

“We can’t be too down about the result, we need to take the positives and move on to Norwich.”

While the late goal would have left the away side in a negative mood, Benitez may have been reminding his players of the positives to come out of the draw.

They have come away from a game against a side that many were backing for promotion at the start of the campaign with a point, and arguably deserved to take all three home with them.

And with the team being forced to learn the lesson but not being punished by suffering a defeat, Benitez will be hoping that his players reflect on the result as a slightly lucky escape and capitalise on that in the coming weeks.
