Roque Mesa has only started one Premier League game for Swansea City and could now return to La Liga.
Roque Mesa looked like one of the signings of the season on paper. The moustached midfielder was right near the top of the statistical tables of passing and interceptions during an excellent 2016/17 season with Las Palmas – comfortably justifying Swansea City’s decision to invest £11 million in his services, according to the BBC.
For whatever reason, however, Swansea boss Paul Clement has been reluctant to hand Mesa many opportunities this season – despite the tenacious Spaniard impressing in his rare appearances for the South Wales side.
Mesa has started just one of Swansea’s 12 Premier League games. And even the fact that Swansea have won just two times all season, piling the pressure on the under-fire Clement, has not encouraged the manager to put his faith in his 28-year-old dynamo.
And while Mesa recently stated that he was willing to fight for his place, it appears he has had a change of heart. Because AS is reporting that La Liga strugglers Malaga are set to offer him a return to Spain in January – and Mesa is keen on the move.
Malaga, like Swansea, are stuck in the relegation zone and the report states that they see Mesa as the ideal player to solidify a shaky midfield. But due to the money Swansea would demand for the midfielder, a loan move seems more likely.
Malaga have already rescued one struggling Spaniard from South Wales in Borja Baston, signing the club’s record-signing on a season-long loan. And now Mesa could follow in his footsteps – which would hardly help boost Clement’s popularity among a disillusioned Swansea fanbase.
