Pau Lopez has insisted that his season-long spell as Tottenham Hotspur’s third-choice helped him to become the goalkeeper he is today.
Lopez was loaned to Tottenham from Espanyol three years ago, but failed to make a single competitive appearance for Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
The 24-year-old has since featured regularly for both Espanyol and Real Betis, earning him a €23.5 million (around £21.2m) move to AS Roma (Transfermarkt).
Speaking to the Italian side’s official website at his unveiling on Tuesday, Lopez said: “I may not have played much in my year at Tottenham, but I knew that would be the case before I went there.
“It was still a very productive experience. What I learned in England helped make me the goalkeeper I am now.”
Lopez was linked with a return to Tottenham during last summer’s transfer window, but signed for Betis instead.
Luckily for Spurs, the performances of Paulo Gazzaniga in the absence of Hugo Lloris last season ensured that the Spaniard’s services weren’t missed.
Tottenham have released their other senior goalkeeper, Michel Vorm, this summer, and have taken the former Southend United shot-stopper, Ted Smith, on trial with their Under-23s.
