Speaking to the club’s official website, Sunderland defender Patrick Van Aanholt has described striker Jermain Defoe as a role model for the team.

The veteran was the star of the show at the Stadium of Light last season, scoring 18 goals in all competitions and almost singlehandedly keeping them in the Premier League.

He has continued his fine form this season, with seven goals in 12 league games to his name so far.

Last weekend saw him bagging his latest, with the strike taking him to 150 Premier League goals in total, equalling Michael Owen as the seventh highest scorer in the division’s history.

He is very much one of the key men at the club and Van Aanholt says he is setting fine example for those in the Black Cats squad.

“I’m very happy for him because he’s a role model for the team,” he told the club’s official website.

“He is a true professional but what he’s achieved in the game is far from done, and I think he can go on to achieve even more and score a lot more goals. He’s only going to get higher and higher in that list.”

The Black Cats will certainly be hoping there is more to come from the veteran forward given their reliance on him.

They current sit 19th in the table, three points behind West Ham United in 17th place.

Defoe’s goals have been crucial to them being in the position they are in and not cut adrift at the bottom of the table at this early stage of the campaign.
