Rangers fans should not be concerned about life after Allan McGregor according to Ibrox coach Graeme Smith, who tells the Glasgow Evening Times that the likes of Robby McCrorie and Kieran Wright could step into the void created by the legendary goalkeeper.
This time next year, arguably Rangers’ greatest shot-stopper since the turn of the century will turn 39. And, while there is still life in the old dog, even the evergreen McGregor cannot go on defying Father Time forever.
With Wes Foderingham expected to leave the Glasgow giants when his contract expires in the summer, Gers fans might be a little worried about what the future looks like between the sticks for Steven Gerrard’s side.
But don’t be. As Smith, the head of goalkeeping at Rangers’ academy, says, there are a number of talented youngsters waiting in the wings.
“There’s Robby McCrorie, and Kieran Wright who is currently bridging that gap between the first team and the academy,” Smith says.
“You have Robbie McCrorie, who is 22, and he is playing in the Scottish Premiership with Livingston. We have Kieran Wright, who was 20 at the time, and he was playing in the Championship with Alloa. We had Nicky Hogarth, who was 18 years of age and was on-loan to Stirling Albion in League Two.
“The pathway is strong for us.”
None of the aforementioned trio, McCrorie, Wright or Hogarth, have made their first-team debuts in Rangers colours so far but that could change sooner rather than later.
McCrorie, the twin brother of versatile defender Ross, has shone during a series of loan spells away from Ibrox and is finally proving himself at Premiership level. The Scotland youth star, linked with a move to West Ham (Record), conceded just nine times in eight games at Livingston before the season was brought to a premature conclusion.
