‘Pathetic’: Souness blasts Tottenham man during today’s win, Gary Lineker agrees

Graeme Souness let rip at Erik Lamela on Sky Sports Football (04/10/20 at 5:25 pm) for the part he played in Anthony Martial getting sent off during Tottenham’s 6-1 win over Manchester United today.

The outspoken pundit labelled the Spurs playmaker ‘pathetic’ and believes if Martial was sent off then Lamela should have also been given his marching orders.

Match of the Day presenter, Gary Lineker, agreed with Souness’s comments on Sky, as he sent this Twitter message.

Spurs were winning 2-1 when referee Anthony Taylor judged that Martial’s swipe at Lamela from a corner in the first half was deserving of a straight red.

But United fans felt it was the Spurs man who had a swipe at Martial first and he should have also been punished for his actions.

This was echoed by Souness, who didn’t hold back in slamming the actions of the Argentina international.

“Well, if Martial is going then Lamela has to go,” Souness told Sky Sports. “When you raise your hands, I think Lamela is trying to push him off and Martial lashes out.

“It’s like a tickle across your chops and he’s gone down. It’s pathetic. It’s very Latin. If one goes then both have to go. Is that what our game is about? Is that what the English Premier League is about?

“We, when I say we, I mean the British, we do it differently. I have played in a Latin country. I have worked in the Latin countries. I know how they see the game. Lamela will sleep well tonight because he will think he’s done a great piece of work for his team. That’s not us. But that’s in our game now.”

After Martial’s sending off, United well and truly capitulated as Spurs ran riot by scoring six goals at Old Trafford.

Those in North London have been on the end of a number of hidings at the hands of United, but there’s no doubt that they would have enjoyed Sunday’s perforformance.

It has also topped up a brilliant week for Jose Mourinho, who would have enjoyed the wins against his two former clubs during these past few days.
