Everton fans have taken to Twitter to react after the Mirror revealed that Ainsley Maitland-Niles will be staying at Arsenal this season.

What’s the story?

Well, it was The Athletic who revealed that Everton were in talks with Arsenal over a deal for the 24-year-old earlier today.

Maitland-Niles added fuel to the fire yesterday, after he took to social media to say he just wants to go to a club who make him feel wanted and will play him.

Everton made an offer to take the 5-cap England international on loan.

However, the Mirror believe Maitland-Niles will now be staying at the Emirates Stadium following a constructive conversation with Mikel Arteta.

That comes as a real blow to Rafa Benitez, who was hoping to add a right-back to his squad.

The Mirror revealed that a £5m bid for Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson had been submitted, although that deal hasn’t materialised.

Why are Arsenal keeping Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Everton?

We appreciate that clear-the-air talks have been had, but why are Arsenal choosing to keep Maitland-Niles in north London?

A deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu has been completed, with the Japan international set to line up at right-back (Fabrizio Romano).

Maitland-Niles can also play in midfield. However, Arteta also has the likes of Albert Sambi Lokonga and Granit Xhaka, so it remains to be seen where the Arsenal No.15 plays.

Based on his social media post, a move to Goodison Park – where he is likely to start every week – would’ve been much better for his career.

Nevertheless, it looks like it’s time to get back to the drawing board for Benitez.

Let’s see what the Everton fans on Twitter have been saying about the Mirror’s Maitland-Niles update…
