Dean Smith has slammed Jon Moss’s decision to book Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn as ‘pathetic’ in the Birmingham Mail.

McGinn was booked in the second-half for delaying the restart of play, whilst Villa were making two substitutions.

The Scottish midfielder will now miss Villa’s next match, as he has accumulated five yellow cards this season.

But Smith felt that Moss’s decision was a terrible one, and said afterwards: “Unfortunately John McGinn’s got a pathetic yellow card which means he misses the Newcastle game now.

“I don’t understand that decision. If he books Douglas Luiz for the tackle, not a problem, but delaying the restart – it was about half a second after the foul and we were making two subs.

“Again it looked like he couldn’t wait to get that out.”

It’s fair to say that Moss may not be flavour of the month at Villa Park after last night.

City were allowed to score in hugely controversial fashion, when Rodri was deemed to have not been interfering with play in the build up to the first goal in the contest.

Smith was then sent off by Moss for his protests, as he showed his frustrations.

Villa’s defeat to City means that they remain in 11th place in the Premier League table, although they do have games in hand over every other team in the league.
