Steve Clarke has impressed since moving to Killie, taking his side to the top of the league above Celtic.
Pat Nevin has told the Daily Record that he believes Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke is the obvious candidate to replace Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, when the Northern Irishman finally leaves Parkhead.
Rodgers’ stock as a manager has never been higher after guiding Celtic to a seventh successive domestic trophy, and his side remain on course for the illustrious ‘treble treble’.
However, Clarke could be the man to finally put an end to Celtic’s dominance, after Killie’s 2-0 win over Livingston on Wednesday night sent his side to the top of the Scottish Premiership by a point.
Though Celtic have two games in hand and Rangers have one, former Killie and Motherwell star Nevin reckons Clarke is the perfect man to replace former Liverpool and Swansea manager Rodgers at Parkhead.
“The other worry is that if – for whatever reason – Brendan Rodgers was to leave Celtic, then he [Clarke] would be the obvious replacement for him,” Nevin said.
“Steve has European experience and he’s coached and managed at a high level plus he knows how to get the most out of the players he works with so he would tick every box for Celtic.
“Plus he grew up supporting them – when we were at Stamford Bridge the Celtic result was always the first one we would look for after our game was finished on a Saturday afternoon.”
Doubts remain over the future of Rodgers with many questioning whether he can take the Scottish champions any further than he has already, though they look as though they could qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League.
Clarke, 55, has a contract at Rugby Park until the summer of 2020, but as a fan of Celtic, it will surely be difficult for the ex-West Brom and Reading manager.
