Scott Bain remains on loan at Celtic from Scottish Premiership minnows Dundee.
Celtic legend Pat Bonner has told the Scottish Herald that goalkeeper Scott Bain would be the perfect summer signing at Parkhead, as he remains unsure about veteran Dorus de Vries.
Craig Gordon remains the Hoops’ number one and could start against Old Firm rivals Rangers on Sunday afternoon in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park, but it remains to be seen who will be his back-up.
Bain, 26, has starred at Celtic since joining the club on loan from Dundee in the January transfer window, replacing both Gordon and de Vries in four of the Hoops’ last five Scottish Premiership outings.
Two clean sheets and just three goals conceded has convinced Bonner that Bain should be signed permanently and eventually become 35-year-old Gordon’s successor at Celtic Park. But there is no room for de Vries.
“Scott Bain has been nice and calm. I don’t think he’s been over-tested, to be honest. He’ll be delighted to have had that opportunity. I don’t think he would have expected that when he came,” Bonner said.
“If they are going to sign him, he’d be a good signing. At 26, he’s the perfect age. But I think they’ll need to be looking at who’s next. Scott, at the moment, fits that profile. I’m not so sure about Dorus de Vries, to be honest.”
Contracted to Neil McCann’s Dundee until the end of the season, Brendan Rodgers is able to pick up the uncapped Scotsman on a free transfer this summer.
It remains to be seen who will start between the sticks come Sunday, with Bain in goal during the 2-1 loss to Hamilton. However, Gordon seems to have recovered from injury and could regain his starting spot.
Dutchman de Vries, 37, still has another season remaining on his contract at Celtic – worth £7,500 a week according to the Daily Star – but if the Hoops do decide to sign Bain on a permanent basis, then the club could decide to sell the former Swansea City stopper.
