Linked with West Ham earlier this month could Steven Caulker be a decent and cheap option for Newcastle?
Rafael Benitez, manager of Newcastle United, gives his team instructions during the Premier League match against Manchester City.
Time is running out on what looks set to be another frustrating transfer window for Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez.
As the Chronicle reported, Benitez wanted to sign four players during January and yet only one has arrived in the shape of Chelsea loanee Kenedy. A goalkeeper, left-back and striker are still on the wishlist.

Funds are limited at St James’ Park and the Magpies have missed out on two attacking targets recently, with Daniel Sturridge opting to join West Bromwich Albion on loan from Liverpool, while the Shields Gazette reports Nicolai Jorgensen will stay at Feyenoord after Newcastle failed to increase their £15m offer.
Yet despite not being part of his original plan, should Benitez look to bring in another centre-back having opted for a five-man defence in the Toon’s last two matches?

With more central defenders on the pitch increased cover is likely to be needed in the position and Steven Caulker could be the ideal cheap option following his release by QPR last month.
Caulker was linked with West Ham United by the Sun earlier in January but a move failed to materialise and as Luton Today reports, the 26-year-old is currently training with Luton Town to try and maintain his fitness levels.
