The 21-year-old has been one of the most impressive young players in the Scottish Premiership this season and Leeds United are reportedly keen.

Partick Thistle assistant coach Scott Paterson has admitted to the Evening Times that he is surprised that talented defender Liam Lindsay is only now being linked with a move away.

The Daily Record reported back in December that Leeds United had sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action having been alerted to his progress north of the border.

Lindsay’s impressive defensive performances, coupled with five goals in 20 league appearances, have helped guide Partick to the relative heights of seventh in the Scottish Premiership table this season, with the Daily Record adding that Birmingham City and Portsmouth had also expressed an interest.

And The Jags assistant coach believes the young centre-back will improve even further and says he can’t believe clubs south of the border haven’t made a move sooner.

“In every game he plays he’s getting more experienced and he is getting better and better, Paterson told the Evening Times.

“I’m a bit surprised that it’s taken so long for clubs to be noticing him. He’s at that age where clubs down south will try to get players in so they can develop them.

“He’s taking it all in his stride though. It’s always good when players are getting recognised for what they are doing on the pitch, he’s a level-headed lad and he won’t get carried away.”

Paterson also issued a word of warning, stating that making the move to the English leagues too soon can damage a player’s development but, at Leeds, Lindsay would find the perfect club and manager to continue his progress.

The Whites are renowned for their commitment to young players while Garry Monk has regularly given the likes of Ronaldo Vieira, Charlie Taylor and Kalvin Phillips opportunities in the first-team.

And there’s little doubt he’d hand Lindsay the same opportunities, especially with Leeds hardly blessed with depth in the centre-half position.
