Partick Thistle faced Glasgow Rangers recently, but Barton did not get to line up against the one player he wanted to face.

Partick Thistle star Adam Barton has expressed his disappointment that he did not get to line up against Rangers summer signing Joey Barton during his short-lived spell at Ibrox, the Daily Mail reports.

The 34-year-old left Burnley for the Gers during the previous window. His inspired campaign in the Championship last term suggested that he could have been the acquisition that led Mark Warburton’s men back into the title picture during their first season back in the Scottish Premiership.

However, the one-time England international failed to make much of a positive impression during his time with the Gers and left following a long suspension that came in the wake of the club’s defeat to Celtic in September.

And while his quality may have left some opponents glad to see him go – even if he never lived up to expectation in the Scottish Premiership – his namesake has explained why he was looking forward to the chance to face the veteran.

“It was a big thing for Rangers to sign a player of Joey Barton’s calibre,” he told Sportsmail.

“I would have loved to have played against him because he’s played most of his career at the highest level. I’d have loved to have seen what it takes to play at the top level in England but what happened, happened and I didn’t get the chance to face him.”

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of Barton’s time with Rangers is the fact that, apart from the Old Firm game, he was starting to hint that he was beginning to turn a corner that may have resulted in him ultimately finding the form he showed during his time with the Clarets.
