Sheffield Wednesday are expected to at least try to overhaul their squad this summer, after a season of regression in the Championship and a new manager – Jos Luhukay – in place.

But which players could depart Hillsborough in the coming months? HITC Sport’s four-part series continues here, with the seven of the Owls’ most saleable assets (i.e. those on contracts until 2020 or longer.

Joe Wildsmith

Joe Wildsmith of Sheffield Wednesday gives orders to his team mates during the Sky Bet Championship match between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday at Bramall Lane on January 12,...

Reasons he could go: Has made a strong case to become Wednesday’s number one, even when Keiren Westwood is fit again. Is still an baby in goalkeeping terms, and someone else may wan to nurture him.

Reasons he’ll stay: He’s on a long-term contract at Hillsborough, but on a wage which has little impact on Financial Fair Play constraints. From the area and supports the Owls.

Tom Lees

Tom Lees of Sheffield Wednesday looks dejected after the Sky Bet Championship match between Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday at St Andrews (stadium) on September 27, 2017 in...

Reasons he could go: When fit, he’s been one of the Championship’s most consistent defenders in recent seasons. 28 this year, he’s running out of time to play in the Premier League.

Reasons he’ll stay: His recent absence may deter potential suitors.

Joost van Aken

Reasons he could go: Nothing obvious.

Reasons he’ll stay: Hasn’t done enough – yet – to warrant the fee paid by Wednesday last summer, which they would want to recoup. Could be a future asset if he fulfills his potential at Hillsborough.

Adam Reach

Adam Reach of Sheffield Wednesday during Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round match between Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City at Hillsborough on February 17, 2018 in Sheffield, England.

Reasons he could go: The Owls’ standout performer this season and the one who could arguably attract the biggest transfer fee.

Reasons he’ll stay: Premier League clubs may have reservations, while most Championship clubs could struggle to afford him.

Fernando Forestieri

Fernando Forestieri of Sheffield Wednesday celebrates after scoring the opening goal from a penalty during the Sky Bet Championship match between Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday...

Reasons he could go: When fit, he is Wednesday’s best player, but one who tends to play up during the summer months. One more strike, he could be out.

Reasons he’ll stay: May not be properly up and running until next season, following injury. Is he too old for the Premier League?

Jordan Rhodes

Jordan Rhodes of Sheffield Wednesday heads the ball at goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday at Macron Stadium on October 14, 2017 in...

Reasons he could go: To put it fairly, his move just hasn’t worked out an doesn’t look as though it’s going to either. Others have sniffed in recent months however, and it would make sense to try and shift at least part of his salary – even if he only leaves on loan.

Reasons he’ll stay: Others may be wary of meeting Wednesday’s demands, given his recent form.

Sam Winnall

Sam Winnall of Derby County reacts during the Emirates FA Cup Third Round match between Manchester United and Derby County at Old Trafford on January 5, 2018 in Manchester, England.

Reasons he could go: Has done little to hide his desire to leave, while loan club Derby would surely take him – especially if they fail to gain promotion. There’s potential for Wednesday to make a healthy profit on a player who is thought to have cost them just £500,000 – and isn’t universally popular among peers.

Reasons he’ll stay: If his injury doesn’t heal fast enough.
