Parlour responds when asked if Tottenham’s Winks would get in Arsenal’s team

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been selected above Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere for England.

Would Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks get in Arsenal’s team? That was the question put to Ray Parlour on Talksport earlier this morning (9:35).

Winks earned a surprise call-up to England’s senior team on Monday, after Manchester City’s Fabian Delph pulled out through injury.

The 21-year-old impressed after breaking into Tottenham’s plans last season, but saw his campaign curtailed by injury in April and has only just returned to the side – starting three of Spurs’ last four games in all competitions.

And that was enough for Winks to catch Gareth Southgate’s eye, ahead of previous call-ups Jonjo Shelvey, James Ward-Prowse and notably, Jack Wilshere.

One Talksport caller suggested that Wilshere, who plays for Tottenham’s local rivals Arsenal, should have got the nod instead, despite making just two starts this season – both in cup competitions.

When asked if he had a point, Parlour replied: “Yeah… Jack Wilshere’s got all the experience hasn’t he? He’s been there, played it. I think Harry Winks is going to be a top star, don’t get me wrong.”

But would he get into Arsenal’s team? “What now? Probably not at the moment,” added the former Arsenal midfielder.

“I think he’s a really good back up and he’s still learning. I’m sure he’s enjoying playing for Spurs when he gets his opportunities.

“But they have got a very good midfield once they’re all fit, Spurs. So it’s going to be difficult for Harry to get lots of game time.”
