The Spurs manager exchanged words with Dean after their 2-1 Premier League loss at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Former Premier League manager Alan Pardew has sympathised with Mauricio Pochettino after the Tottenham Hotspur manager’s confrontation with referee Mike Dean after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Burnley.
The Lilywhites went to Turf Moor hoping to close the gap between them and Manchester City and Liverpool to just two points, but instead they fell to a defeat which could prove a serious blow to their title hopes.
Prolific Clarets striker Chris Wood broke the deadlock for Sean Dyche’s side early in the second half as he rose to head home Dwight McNeil’s inswinging corner, taking his tally to four goals in four games.
The returning Harry Kane struck back as he connected with Danny Rose’s throw-in and prodded beyond the reach of Tom Heaton, but Ashley Barnes had the last say with the winner seven minutes from time.
Having taken exception to some of the referee’s decisions during the game, Pochettino went to have a word with Dean at full time and had to be pulled away by Clarets defender Phil Bardsley as his frustrations spilled over, later on saying he had “crossed the line” and would “maybe” apologise to the referee.
Speaking to beIN Sports after the game, Pardew gave his opinion about the incident, saying: “Your self control is obviously put to one side, because the emotions got the better of Pochettino, that is why he has gone up to the referee. He got very close to the referee, and that will probably get him in trouble.
“Having said that, Mike Dean, if I was a manager and he had said something to me in that instance, I’m going to react, and the referee would be, in my opinion, best to say nothing.”
Tottenham suffered only their second defeat in their last eight away games in the Premier League, after losing two of the four before that, and moving forward, they go to Chelsea in midweek for a Wednesday night clash.
