Paratici may have set the wheels in motion for Spurs’ next signing this time last year– Our View

Tottenham are in for a busy summer transfer window, and if reports are to be believed, their next signing could be Cristian Romero.

Pierluigi Gollini hasn’t officially been announced as a Spurs player yet, but he’s jumped protocol and announced the move himself, and it could be another Atalanta player through the door next.

Indeed, personal terms have reportedly been agreed with Romero, and if Spurs can agree a deal with Atalanta, the Argentine will be headed to north London.

Interestingly, this wouldn’t be the first time Fabio Paratici and Romero’s paths have crossed.

Paratici had Romero at Juventus, and he was the one who let him go to Atalanta this time last year, on a two-year loan deal with an option to buy.

That, therefore, made him, for all intents and purposes, an Atalanta player – hence why Spurs are negotiating with Atalanta rather than Juventus at the moment.

In agreeing to sell Romero to Atalanta, Paratici may have inadvertently set the wheels in motion for Spurs to sign him this summer.

Think about it, Romero is the reigning Serie A Defender of the Year winner, and he’s headed to Spurs. Would Tottenham really have been able to pull off this type of deal if he was still at Juventus?

All due respect to Atalanta and Spurs, but they’re not on Juve’s level in terms of stature or financial power, and if Spurs were to ask the Old Lady for their best defender, there’s very little chance they’d be able to land them.

However, it has to be said that north London is a more appetising destination than Bergamo purely due to the financial packages on offer in the Premier League compared to Serie A, but Juventus are one of the rare clubs outside of England who can compete on that front.

Paratici selling Romero to Atalanta may seem like a mistake from Juventus’ standpoint, but it’s turned out to be something of a masterstroke for the Sporting Director as he’s now been able to agree personal terms with the Argentine, and that’s something he may not have been able to do if he was starring for Juventus rather than Atalanta.
