Papiss Cisse says he intends to stay at Newcastle.
Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse has told Sky Sports that he intends to stay at St. James’ Park despite recent speculation surrounding his future.
Newcastle have not only appointed a new manager in Steve McClaren, but are also expected to undergo a total overhaul of the playing squad this summer.
Having only narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship, and whilst McClaren needs to bring in new signings, he must also allow players to leave the club too.
Sky Sports reported earlier today that Newcastle were open to selling striker Papiss Cisse, despite the Senegalese international finishing the season as the Magpies’ top goalscorer.
Cisse has now tackled the speculation over his future, telling Sky Sports that whilst he is a Newcastle player, his focus will remain with the club.
“I am here, I am a Newcastle striker. I have one year and a half contract with this team,” said Cisse. “I just think about my holiday then I go back to try to work hard. I try be part of a good team and do something next year.”
The right decision?
Cisse is now 30, but hit 11 goals in 22 games last season, proving that he does still have the ability to score goals in the Premier League.
If McClaren is keen to raise funds to bring in younger players with potential, then selling Cisse could be ideal, cashing in on him whilst they can before his value drops in the coming years.
In most situations, selling a top goalscorer would be a bad move – but considering Cisse’s age and wages, Newcastle may be making the right decision by looking to sell Cisse this summer.
