West Ham legend and Sky Italia pundit, Paolo Di Canio, has been suspended from his role with the news giant after showcasing his tattoo during the coverage of the Premier League on Sunday, the BBC reports.

Ex-Sunderland manager Di Canio revealed his tattoo of the word ‘Dux,’ a Latin word that holds serious connotations in Italy as it was adopted by war-time Italian Dictator, Benito Mussolini.

After a social media backlash, Sky have made a move to apologise for the actions of their presenter, with a Sky Executive stating, according to the BBC: “We made a mistake, we are sorry to all who were hurt.”

The Sky Sports executive vice-president, Jacques Raynaud, confirmed Di Canio’s suspension, announcing: “After speaking at length to Di Canio, and despite his professionalism and his expertise regarding football, we have decided together to suspend the partnership.”

This isn’t the first time that Di Canio has been reprimanded for his controversial political views, being fined after performing the fascist salute in the Derby della Capitale against Roma in 2005.

He was also criticised after being appointed Sunderland manager in 2013, when the former Italian maestro refused to address the reports of his political association at a press conference shortly after taking the helm.
