Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has told TalkSPORT that even he could hear Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho communicating with his team to be more defensive yesterday.

Tottenham drew 1-1 with Palace, and towards the end of the game they showed very little intent to grab a winner.

With Wolves losing 2-0 to Chelsea, Tottenham only needed a point to guarantee a place in the Europa League.

And Townsend says that he heard Mourinho telling his Tottenham players to be cautious, to ensure that they did not throw their lead away.

“We were playing Spurs and they only needed a point to finish sixth.

“You could tell the Spurs bench knew and Jose Mourinho was getting messages on to the pitch that they only needed a draw, and in the last 10 minutes they were literally taking the ball into the corner.”

Mourinho’s joyous reaction at full-time proved just how much he wanted to get Tottenham into Europe this term.

The Portuguese boss has already stressed that he will be taking the Europa League seriously next season, even if he ideally wanted to be in the Champions League.

Mourinho deserves great credit for guiding Tottenham into sixth place, as they were 14th when he took over.

Spurs have improved since the Premier League restarted, and have shown plenty of signs of encouragement to take into next season.
