Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle has come under criticism for his performance in the Eagles’ 1-0 defeat against Southampton last night.
Gayle was given a role as a lone-striker in the match, but he failed to get involved and it left Palace fans frustrated.
Although the 24-year-old is clearly a valuable asset, he seems incapable of leading the line by himself and he cut an isolated figure last night.
Gayle’s strength lies in his ability to play on the shoulder of defenders, and performing a role where he has to bring others in to play doesn’t appear to get the best out of him.
Pardew has generally deployed Gayle on a wing up until this point and his display in the striking role last night suggests that he is more suited to playing in a wider berth.
Gayle didn’t manage to have a shot last night, nor did he forge an opening for a teammate, in a largely ineffective performance.
