Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has offered some advice to Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard before he decides on Rangers manager’s job.

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has given Steven Gerrard some advice amid rumours that Rangers want him to be their next manager.

Gers are on the hunt for someone new in the dugout after Graeme Murty left the position following the 5-0 Scottish Premiership defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic at the weekend.

Hodgson managed Gerrard at Liverpool and for the England national team and says the 37-year-old – who is currently a youth coach at Anfield – must do his “due diligence” before taking his first job in management.

“Stevie has done an apprenticeship by working with the youth team at Liverpool but I wouldn’t give him any other advice other than to do the due diligence and if he thinks it’s the right job, to make certain he believes in himself, like I would certainly believe in him,” the 70-year-old told the Evening Times.

Sky Sports reports that Rangers are currently in talks with Gerrard about taking the role at Ibrox ahead of next season.

Murty was set to remain in charge until the end of the current campaign having been given a short-term contract having initially taken over as caretaker in October following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha.

However, the 43-year-old admitted that the rumours around Gerrard had made things difficult for him personally, and Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson will now oversee the final three matches of the 2017/18 campaign.

Murty is taking some time away from football to consider his options, but the Glasgow outfit have left the door open for him to return to his previous role with the club’s academy.
