Former Celtic hero Packie Bonner has hailed Hoops goalkeeper Craig Gordon as the best in the league in his position.

Gordon has received criticism from football pundits and fans this season, but Bonner reckons that the Scotland goalkeeper has kept the critics at bay with his brilliant performance against Rangers.

The 35-year-old has made some costly errors in the Champions League and in other big games, but according to Bonner he is still head and shoulders above the rest in Scotland.

Gordon produced two stunning saves to deny Rangers at the weekend to ensure Celtic get to come away with a point from the match.

Bonner says that Gordon’s remarkable stat of 23 clean sheets in 42 matches for club and country shows why he is still the best in Scotland.

The 57-year-old also adds that Gordon has worked hard and improved on his use of the ball from the back (read as distribution).

Craig Gordon of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I have always said Craig is the best goalkeeper in the country and he proved it again against Rangers,” said Bonner, as quoted by the Scottish Daily Record.

“He made a couple of unbelievable saves and while I know Celtic created chances of their own, you could argue he was the reason they managed to earn a point.

“They created some great opportunities but that is why you need a top goalkeeper like Craig. He can make saves like that and I’m sure his team-mates would have been be grateful although he’ll see it as just doing his job.

“Craig has taken a bit of stick this season, but I think it has more been down to his use of the ball from the back, as opposed to his shot stopping. But it’s an area of his game he has worked hard on and improved.”

Celtic are top of the Scottish Premier League with 51 points from 22 games, eight points ahead of second placed Aberdeen.
