Leeds United midfielder Pablo Hernandez has spoken out about his time at Elland Road, admitting that he did not realise before joining the Whites just how close-knit the relationship is between the club and the city.
The four-cap Spain international joined Leeds initially on a six-month loan from Qatari club Al-Arabi in August 2016 and impressed enough to get a contract until the end of that season, but such has his impact been at the club that he is now on a deal until 2020 (Transfermarkt).
Hernandez has been particularly impressive this season, his brace in the 3-2 win against Millwall last weekend has taken his tally to 12 goals in the Championship, while he has also provided 11 assists, according to Transfermarkt.
Leeds are second in the Championship table with 76 points – two clear of third-placed Sheffield United – with just seven games left to play, and Hernandez is eager for the city to be able to call their team a Premier League outfit for the first time since 2004.
“This city deserves a Premier League team,” he is quoted by FourFourTwo as saying. “We take 7,000 away fans to most games.
“You don’t realise before you come here what the relationship between club and city is like. This is a sleeping giant and we want to change that… coming to Leeds is the best decision I’ve made in my career.”
Hernandez’s overall tally at Leeds so far stands at 113 appearances, with 27 goals scored and 29 assists registered.
