Pablo Hernandez hints Thomas Christiansen to thank for Leeds’ goals against Middlesbrough

Leeds United got back to winning ways in the Championship as they beat Middlesbrough 2-1 at Elland Road.

Pablo Hernandez has seemingly suggested that Thomas Christiansen is to thank for Leeds’ two goals in their win over Middlesbrough on Sunday as he told LUTV that the manager had told the Whites’ wingers to make sure they put themselves in the box to get on the end of crosses.

Leeds went into the international break off the back of a torrid run of form that had seen them slide out of the play-off places in the Championship, and it appeared that something was going to have to change during the international break if they were to get their season back on track when Garry Monk brought his Middlesbrough side to Elland Road at the weekend.

And that change certainly did come with Leeds running out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Hernandez and Gjanni Alioski either side of half-time – with both wingers getting on the end of crosses that had found their way to the back post to be converted by the two wide-men who had come inside.

And Hernandez explained after the game that it had been an instruction from Christiansen to make runs into the box when the ball was on the opposite flank in the hope that the ball would make its way through to the back post.

“The last two weeks we worked on this. The manager told the wingers we need to arrive in the box,” he told LUTV.

“Anything can happen and the most important thing is when you arrive in the box, you believe the ball maybe arrive at you and you can score and I think it’s very important for us the first goal in the first-half.”

If the win was not clear enough evidence that Christiansen probably deserves to not be answering too many serious questions about his future right now, Hernandez’s suggestion is arguably another reason why the 44-year-old could prove to be the man to lead Leeds back up into the promotion picture.
