Pablo Hernandez was Leeds United’s hero at the weekend as they strengthened their position inside the top two in the Championship.

Pablo Hernandez has to be considered one of Leeds’ best signings in recent memory, and it would be difficult to argue with those who deem the Spanish maestro to be up there amongst the Whites’ shrewdest ever additions.
The 33-year-old is by far the oldest member of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad and yet he appears to be getting better the longer he spends at Elland Road.
Saturday’s winner against Sheffield United takes his tally for the season to seven goals in the Championship. And that, remarkably, leaves Hernandez just one strike away from achieving his best return in a league season in his entire career.
He scored seven times last term – generally proving to be the one shining light as Leeds’ season capitulated – and now has 26 games to clear that total this time around.

It is a fantastic achievement from a player who is continuing to be so important to Bielsa’s side. And with his latest goal coming in a game that saw Bielsa encourage him to lead the line, it is clear that there is a lot more to come from Hernandez before he decides to call time on his career.
It is no secret to Leeds fans how integral he is. But surely it is fair to say that he still does not get the credit that he deserves for his current run of form.

Hernandez’s longest run without a goal or assist in the league this term is just one game. In nine of his 13 appearances this season, he has scored or contributed an assist.
Hernandez is reaching the stage of his career which sees many players looking to wind down and think about the moves that will set them up for the end of their playing days.
But on current form, it appears that actually, the best could be still to come.
